Ten-minute post: This year's aim!

Now, spring is coming, and I will become a third-year student. I would like to share my aim in this year.

First, I am determined to get a higher score on TOEIC test. Besides, I want to challenge the Japanese and English examination. I am going to take a course of studying for a public test of a Japanese teacher.

I am thinking about going to a driving school sometime in this year. It will enable me to get more freedom. Ha ha! I am thinking whether I can get some qualifications. It is also good to get the qualification of a teacher of piano.

Anyway, I am determined to study much harder than last year! I have so many things to do!
But the most important priorities for me are learning English and Chinese. I will be careful not to lose the first aim, which I came to this university for!

Let's drive to the end of this year, the third year, and univrsity life!

▼△ Zhong-wen 中文 △▼

I started again the private lesson of Chinese two weeks ago. First time, I had forgotten Chinese words and phrases. Gradually, however, I remembered them.
Today was the second lesson after I came back from California. I enjoyed talking with my teacher, but I think that I should try to talk more Chinese, not Japanese, even if she is great at communicating in Japanese. It is because I depend on her Japanese when I ask a little difficult questions. I have to! Otherwise, I will end up wasting this great chance that I get now.
Today, she told me to try to study for Chinese examination too in this lesson. It must be one of my aims to study Chinese. I am looking forward to trying it. Of course, I have to study a little harder than now. I feel it is a great thing to have a things to try!
Besides, she gave me a 'Geppei'(月餅), a Chinese sweets. It was made in Japan. I liked it. She taught me that it is a sweet in Autumn. In China, she don't see them so much in the other seasons, though there are not so different in every season in Japan. Autumn is a season for eating too! Ha ha!

Website Review: Let's take in Fresh English!

Hi, everyone in the Foreign Languages Department! Are you trying hard to learn English? I know, of course, you are trying. How do you study English, then? Recently, I had been thinking about how to learn English, though that is just my intimate affair. I was anxious about my learning English, because some of my friends are to go study abroad next year, but I’m not. I found the good materials in the BBC’s web site, so I would like to introduce it this time.

BBC stands for British Broadcasting Corporation. My favorite point about this web site is that it has English learning program. There are so many sites just with English games on the Internet. This site also has many games for kids, but not only that. At the bottom of the page, it has a corner that “Explore the BBC”. You can choose a link, “Learning English” in it. If you click on it, it shows lists with many items, like “NEWS ENGLISH”, “QUIZZES AND EXAMS”, “GRAMMER & VOCABULARY”, and “BUSINESS ENGLISH”.

This time, I will recommend you to use the part of “GRAMMER & VOCABULARY”. You will find an item, “Pronunciation>>”. It has video with a native English speaker. She explained what the good pronunciation is and why we need to learn such a kind of pronunciation. Her British English is so nice and clear, and her advice becomes a good encouragement for us. It must be inducements to you to learn English and make your pronunciation better and clearer.

It will help you to learn modern and practical English! Besides, you might want to get knowledge about world news. You can also listen to the English news stories with video and audio. It makes it possible for you to learn how to express new things in English, that is, new coinages which are used in the modern world.

I am thinking of making use of this site too. We need to take in fresh English in order to communicate in this modern and global society. You agree with it, don’t you? I want to keep trying to make a progress in English like everyone. I will show the address of this web site below, so please check it out! You won’t regret it.

BR2-04: Chinese Adventure

I read "Chinese Adventure" too. It is also one of the series 'Oxford Reading Tree'. I got interested in it, and I think it is because I have been learning Chinese. Chinese must be an interesting language especially for Japanese people, because it also uses Kanji as Japanese. The pronunciation is so difficult for us, but we can understand the meaning to a certain extent. Understanding the meaning is so interesting, don't you think so?

Chinese culture is very unique, isn't it? A vase in this story is one of them. The vase got broken, but the Children could find another one in the adventure. It was nice of them not to forget their grand mother's vase, even when they are in a adventure. I thought the new vase was much better than original one, because it had the Chinese writing on it. It was a real Chinese vase. I felt the uniqueness of Chinese culture with it.

SUMMER☆

I had hoped that I could stay in other country where English is spoken this summer. Finally, I have got a good news today!

I called a woman and speak with her, who is a Japanese and lives in the United States. I could do it, thanks to my friends' introductions. She is so gentle and friendly, so I could feel really relaxed. Besides, she happily granted my requests. She often undertakes homestays, and it is said that some people stay there repeatedly.

I will plan carefully from now, and I want to make the most use of this chance. I am really looking forward to it. I really appreciate my friends' help.I think I should labor on listening English from now. I hope this summer vacation will be great time for me! I really appreciate my friends' kind.

Self-intro: THE Sharing

We are to give a presentation in next class(?), so we have to prepare our own power point. Today, I have made a power point about myself. I tried to share the information about some aspects of mine. It does not show all my aspect, but I included various information about me in it. I thought that it is difficult to post medias, because I had not posted the media like this, actually. However, some of my friends helped me to post it, and I could have it done! I could enjoy my own power point. I appreciate their helps. Thanks a lot!

What can I Do This Summer?

I am trying hard for a plan for this summer vacation. I have decided not to study abroad this year, but of course, I am intend to learn English abroad and I want to do it even this year.

My friends introduced me to their acquaintance or friends who live in Australia and United States. There is not so much time left until summer vacation, so it is not certain that I can stay there then, but I hope I can and try for it.

I want to spend this summer vacation more usefully than last year. I think of the saying, "Time flies" as really true. I should go and stay abroad now, because it'll be difficult after I begin to work once. I will share the result about the plan for this summer!

Vocabulary → Communication

In the Chinese lesson on this Wednesday, my teacher suggested me that I should memorise more various words of Chinese nouns. She said the vocabulary also influences greatly on the communication skills, and I think the vocabulary is very important in any other languages too.

She will give me new words every week, and I must try to memorise them as homework. The plan has started, and there are words about foods and drinks this week. For example, hot dogs, hamburgers, spaghetti, sandwiches, pizzas, salads, cakes, ice creams, coffee, tea, cola, beer, juice. This homework might get harder next week, but I will try!

  • I think my best essay is "Essay: University Life", because it includes my goals for my four years! No aims, no life. It is the same in university life, isn't it? I will not lose the reasons why I came here. Besides, this essay shows the points most definitely. It is also an encouragement for me!

Essay: To know others & To know myself !

First of all, learning languages is very interesting! I know everyone think so too, don’t you? Of course, it never easy for me, but “No effort, no pleasure!” I often have to say it to myself! Anyway, our topic for this time is the language learning. I think the encounters, aims, incentives are especially important.

When, where and how I encounter a language is important, I feel. Now, I would like to talk about my first one. I began to learn the first foreign language when I was a junior high school student. Of course, it was English. Although native speakers sometimes came to my junior school, I was not interested in English. In the junior high school, I probably liked English, but I could not understand the grammar, especially be-verbs. For example, “I am swim.” is a sentence that I made in those days. That’s why I think the encounter of English and I was not so good. However, I had traveled abroad, so I thought English is a very important language, and I hoped that I will communicate people who live in countries where I will visit. In other words, I had an aim to learn it. Fortunately, I could understand English grammar at last in a high school class, and I got impressed and began to study harder. And! I am here. I am planning to stay other country for a month in summer in stead of studying abroad, so it becomes an incentive for me. I think it is also important to take tests, like TOEFL and TOEIC. The score is helpful to see whether we improve or lose our skill concretely.

Now, I am enjoying learning other languages. One of them is Chinese. I think that Chinese is the most close to me in my present circumstances. My friends also study Chinese. One of them has lived for five years in Taiwan, and she introduced me to Taiwanese friends and a Chinese teacher who lives here in Kumamoto. This is the encounter with Chinese. I have friends in Taiwan and sometimes write letters in Japanese and English and Chinese. Although some of them are good at speaking Japanese, my aim is to communicate with them in their mother tongue. I take a private lesson of Chinese every week, and it is very beneficial for me. These two points are incentives.

Besides, what I realized is the importance of learning Japanese. When we learn foreign languages, it gets us to see our own language in a different and objective view. Now I a little understand differences between Japanese and other languages and think of differences of thinking from them. It is also an interesting point. My Taiwanese friends are very eager in studying Japanese. It became an encounter for me to teach Japanese. This year, I take a course to learn how to teach Japanese to foreigners with my friend. I knew how difficult it is. However, I want to improve my teaching and teach my foreign friends. It is my aim, I think. Besides, I hope that this experience serve to live in other countries someday. This is an incentive for it.

As a conclusion, the encounters, aims and incentives are important to me. I am really glad that I could come to this foreign language department. Here are my friends trying to study languages together. I am encouraged by them and other friends to keep trying. I would like to continue learning in this university and after my graduation.

Test Review: TOEIC challenge!

For studies of languages, it is very important to know how my skill improve or drop. I think that taking a test is a good way in that I know it. I took the TOEIC test again. This time was the second time for me, and it was on last Saturday.

When I had taken it last time, I could not follow the speed of speaking in the listening section. I could not also finish the all of the papers in a limited time. I remember that I just marked A, B or C on my answer sheet with just my hunch. There was no time for thinking. I got very nervous in the last ten minutes, because I was in a terrible hurry!

After the first experience, I took a course during the spring vacation, and studied for TOEIC. The teacher got us to try a practice examination in the last class. My skill had improved, and the score was higher than my first try on the TOEIC test by 90 score! I wanted to take a real TOEIC soon, but TOEIC was not planned.

And!!! At last, I have challenged TOEIC on last Saturday! I am a little worried about it, because Some months have already passed since I studied hard in the spring vacation.

Fortunately, however, it was a good challenging, I think. During the test, I could keep concentrating my attention on it. Thanks to the concentration, I could follow the speaking speed in the listening section, and read questions for next conversation on ahead in each time. In the reading section, I am a little in a hurry in the middle of the time, but I could make it! I had a few minutes to check the miss of marking.

Of course, I do not know what my score will be like this time, but I am satisfied that I could make it in time. I will know the result of it two weeks ago. Now I am looking forward to seeing it.

Foreign Countries ― to the WORLD!

To visit foreign countries is very interesting! It is because there are different atmospheres, streets, languages, smells, foods, and meetings with various people.

I have been to foreign countries, and visit those in Europe five times, those in Asia three times, Hawaii once, Saipan once, and Canada once.

However, in the most of these travels, I enjoyed only sightseeing with my family. I regret it now, and I wish I had spoken to people there more, and then I must have had more interesting experiences. I am determined to try it next time!

I am a student of this English department, so I must try it! Don't you think so? I really appreciate that I came to this department in this university!

Good Evening! I had a private Chinese lesson in this afternoon and enjoyed it. I started it last Wednesday.

My teacher is a native Chinese, and she is very pretty and well-mannered. The lesson spends an hour a week, but it is very substantial time. I felt that a review of the last lesson before every lesson in order to remember what I learned in lessons.

Now, as the starting, I study a Chinese textbook in the lesson, that I used in the class of university last year.

The pronunciations in Chinese are difficult and exhaust muscles around mouth. My teacher praise me frequently, then I think I must make much more effort.

I want to say to myself, 加油!

My other classes — Korean???

This year, I took a Korean class. This is my first time that I study Korean. Many Koreans visit Japan today, and I have seen some of them, so I got interested in the language.

Some words in Korean are similar to Japanese words, and the word order is like that of Japanese. However, the Hangul, Korean alphabet is so difficult for me to memorize.

Of course, I can not learn so many languages at the same time, and Korean is not the prior or most important language for me, but I hope that I will learn how to greet briefly in Korean.

The languages are wonderful and interesting! Don't you think so?

Study of English

To build up my vocabulary in English, I often try to use various expression from a dictionary when I make a presentation and write essays.

Unfortunately, I do not like reading, so I read books which are easy for me to read, not difficult ones. I think that it is important in order to keep trying to read.

I feel that reading aloud and listening to English CDs on the wat to and from school are also helpful for me. Recently, I do not have so much time to study English, but I think what I should do now is to utter and listen English every day, even for a little time.

Essay: University Life

It has already passed more than one year since I entered this university. Now, I think that it is good for me to talk about my university life. I want to focus on an aspect this time. It is also relevant to my aim which I had had when I entered this university. It is the language study.

I am majoring in English, so I have many English classes every week. At first, I got very nervous whenever I have to give my opinion and make a presentation in class, because I had not had such experiences before. However, I think that it is the valuable exercises to get accustomed to express my own opinions and feelings. Besides, I am challenging to get a high score in TOEIC. It is also an important target.

My second foreign language is Spanish. I feel that all of European languages are very difficult in grammar and paradigms. I like Spanish, however, because it has a cheerful mood. However, I think my true second foreign language is Chinese. It is also spoken by so many people. I have Taiwanese friends and got interested in it. I took Chinese lessons last year. This year, I am planning to start a private lesson by a native Chinese next week. I think that I can make such an effort because I got incentive to study Chinese from the meeting with my Taiwanese friends. By experience, I learned that the language study needs an incentive.

A pleasant part of university life is long vacations. It is very good to consider a plan. I am considering about staying in Australia in next summer vacation, and I also hope to stay in Taiwan in next spring vacation. I think it will be an enjoyable vacation and an opportunity for me to get an incentive for the language study. I should have such unforgettable experiences in my university life. It is a great use of vacations, isn’t it?

However, I have sometimes lost my original aim in my university life. In my curriculum, there are not only languages but also other various subjects such as social subjects and sciences. I have to take those classes too. When I am plowed under with homework for the classes and work to the deadline of reports, I often failed to attend to studying of languages. I was content with only finishing those assignments in time. In order not to waste the lesson, I am trying to set the order of priority this year, so that I can get satisfied when I graduate. My aim is not to write reports for sociology and history. I came to this school to improve my English, study other languages, and become able to orient myself to life in other countries.

As a conclusion, I am determined to enjoy learning foreign languages. I really appreciate I can do so. I think that my university life will be fruitful, no, I will make it meaningful. Of course, I do not have to become a perfectionalist. As long as I came to this university, I want to achieve my original aim. I really hope that I can enumerate what I gain in my university life, when I am asked, “What have you got in four years?”

Piles of Papers

I took a nap in this afternoon. I felt very comfortable...

But! After I woke up, I had to read newspapers. On next Thursday, I am to have a quiz test again in the reading class, so I need to know about current affairs by reading the newspapers. It is not easy to understand those news topics, but it is useful practically for me, I think. Lately, I am getting used to reading them. In this week, the top news was about a provisional tax rate of gasoline and ballooning oil prices. On May 1st, the prices of gasoline rose to the 150 level by about 30 yen per litter in many gas stations. It must be a main topic.

The newspapers to read kept piling up until today, but I have finished reading them. I reach my goal for today's study. I will keep reading the newspaper tomorrow too.

我的台湾朋友!

Do you read and understand this phrase? It means 'My Taiwanese Friend'.

I have friends in Taiwan. One of them is older than me by two years old and very gentle and kind girl. She has a younger sister who is the same age as me. The younger sister likes swimming very much and goes swimming in early morning, without having a breakfast! It is unbelievable for me. They have been to my hometown as long time ago.

Besides, I visited them in Taiwan in August last year. The climates in Taiwan is very hot and humid, like where I live. My favorite food there are 芒果(Mango), 餃子(Jiao-zi), 三明治(san-ming-zhi), and so on. I tried so many foods! How delicious they are! I recommend you trying those foods.

The Taiwanese friend studies Japanese hard, and her Japanese is so fluent and natural. I am not puzzled in communications with her. If She can not understand a Japanese word, she can follow my explanation in Japanese.

Since last year, I have also studied Chinese in the class at the university. Besides, I plan to learn Chinese from a native Chinese teacher. I am really looking forward to be a fluent speaker of Chinese, and communicate with my friends in the language. Then, I will enjoy the significant visiting in Taiwan next time.

My hobbies

My hobby was to play the piano until when I was a junior high school student. I learned how to play the piano. However, I became too busy in studying to play the piano after I entered the high school. It was when I began to learn how to play the tunes of Sonata. I am very sorry about it.

Now, my hobby is to study some foreign languages. I have been to Spain and Taiwan, and now I try to learn Spanish and especially Chinese, not only English. I am really looking forward to see which language helps me in the future.

Besides, my favorite sports is tennis, because my parents, who like to play tennis, affected me so much. To play tennis is so fresh to me!

However, my most important hobby (or a custom?) is eating and chatting with my friends or my mother! It is also a main event in the everyday life, isn't it? I can really freshen myself and get away from the stress every day. Besides, even when I face troubles or unpleasant things, I can for get those bad memories and get ready to take a positive attitudes toward them, not a pessimistic view. This hobby is very helpful for me to keep my condition of physically and mentally. I really thank those people.

'Spanish' Hola !

I am majoring in English. I chose Spanish for the classes of second language. I feel Spanish is a very cheerful and lively language. Besides, it comes from Latin, and I think that it is like English in Vocabulary but very unique in the pronunciation and the grammar.

Because I like cheerful Spanish language, it was my intention to take the Spanish classes this year too. However, the Spanish and my compulsory subject are the same period, so I could not take the Spanish class. I consulted my teacher of Spanish about the matter. If I do not study Spanish for a year, I must forget the Spanish grammar and vocabulary and idioms, so I decided to buy a text for learning Spanish and study Spanish by myself this year. It is cheerful language!
